Abstract: The Air & Space 18A is one of only three gyroplanes awarded an FAA standard airworthiness certificate (1H17) since the Second World War. Originated by Ray E. Umbaugh in the late 1950s to provide cost-efficient point-to-point transportation for his agricultural fertilizer sales force, the gyroplane project underwent changes in design, management, and financial condition before succumbing to the effects of legal complications in 1968. Supported since that time until 2000 by the former dealers, the 18A is now an orphan aircraft. The 18A provides performance almost identical to that of the 1939-era Pitcairn PA-39 and demonstrates the advantages and limitations of those first generation jump-takeoff Autogiros.
